MRCI: Midwest Regional Carbon Initiative
Project Overview
The Midwest Regional Carbon Initiative (MRCI) is a broad coalition of partners dedicated to accelerating the deployment of CCS technologies in the Midwest and Northeastern United States. MRCI is led by Battelle Memorial Institute and the Illinois State Geological Survey and aims to advance CCS technology deployment by addressing key technical challenges, obtaining and sharing data, facilitating regional infrastructure planning, and performing regional technology transfer. Our region includes states from the Midwest to the east coast, covering more than one-third of the nation’s CO2 point sources, accounting for 945 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. The majority of these sources are from power plants. The region covers multiple geologic storage systems including the Michigan Basin, Illinois Basin, Appalachian Basin, Atlantic Coast, and Offshore formations. The MRCI region has hosted more than a dozen pilot CCS projects over the past two decades, making it a prime location for world-leading deployment of CCS technologies in the coming years.
Carbon Solutions is supporting the MRCI via contributions to the Geoscience Team and applications of its SimCCS software.
