The CO2 National Capture Opportunities and Readiness Data (COโ‚‚NCORD) enables users to identify sources of CO2 (e.g., cement manufacturers, ethanol refineries) that could be profitably used for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. It provides the CO2 capture cost, technology readiness level (TRL), and lifecycle CO2 emissions of emission facilities across the country by integrating the latest public data and scientific research into a single end-user platform. Developing COโ‚‚NCORD requires a novel integration of advances in multiple disciplines across five research objectives: 1) big data fusion, 2) CO2 capture stream characterization, 3) life cycle assessment, 4) advanced techno-economics, and 5) software engineering.

While we use many data sources, some of the primary data sources we consider are the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) data, the EPA’s Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID), and the EIA’s Ethanol Plant Production Capacity report.

COโ‚‚NCORD can be used alone to determine the location of emissions sources relative to existing and proposed sites, or in conjunction withย SimCCSPro to model the transportation network required to connect CO2 emissions to storage sites.
COโ‚‚NCORD helps industrial emitters, CO2 pipeline developers, CO2 storage owners, carbon capture providers, and researchers to identify capturable CO2 and screen for low-cost capture within an area of their choice. This allows for both in-depth assessment of a small area and national assessment of capturable sources. Additionally, COโ‚‚NCORD performs a preliminary LCA analysis of installing carbon capture, which can help decision makers to optimize their decarbonization approach.
COโ‚‚NCORD currently evaluates capturable CO2 and the likely cost per tonne from the perspective of installing amine-based carbon capture. However, other technologies are likely to be considered in the future.
