Overview
Carbon Solutions is hiring a mid-career R&D Project Manager to manage federal and commercial R&D projects in carbon management, including areas such as CO2 Transportation and Storage, Subsurface Characterization and Modeling, and Front End Engineering & Design (FEED) studies.

Energy applications include CO2 capture and storage, direct air capture, hydrogen, geothermal energy, wind energy, energy storage, air quality co-benefits, and energy equity and environmental justice. We use a range of data analytics and other technical approaches including infrastructure optimization, GIScience, life cycle assessment, technoeconomic assessment, process- and systems-level modeling, machine learning, and policy analysis. The company is fully remote with approximately 30 staff working across the United States.
Job Description: R&D Project Manager (Fully Remote)
The R&D Project Manager will oversee multi-disciplinary teams on federal and commercial R&D projects. Federal projects are multi-year, multi-institution grants requiring a range of activities, including project execution and oversight, financial management, staff assignment, federal reporting, and contract management. Commercial projects are often short-term, time-sensitive projects that require managing commercial relationships while ensuring the project is completed on time and on budget.
In addition to managing projects, the R&D Project Manager will be responsible for assisting in the preparation of federal and commercial project proposals, presenting at conferences or project meetings, managing vendors, supporting company-wide resource planning, and assisting with staff hiring and reviews. For this position, the R&D Project Manager will be expected to:
- Manage a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency team ensuring resourcing, scheduling, budgeting, and deliverable commitments are met. Example federal projects are the RITAP, CarbonSAFE, and CO2 Transport FEED initiatives.
- Support the financial and administration teams in monthly invoicing and financial management activities.
- With other project managers, provide feedback on staff performance, including goal setting and team building.
- With other project managers, design and implement a consistent approach to managing projects.
- Demonstrate exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Participate in continuous improvement, helping to make Carbon Solutions a business where people want to work.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Degree: Masters’s degree in geoscience, engineering, or related field with at least five years’ work experience OR a PhD degree with at least three years’ work experience in a relevant field, such as Earth & Geosciences, Engineering (Chemical, Civil/Environmental, Mechanical, Petroleum, etc.), and other related areas.
- Federal Grants: At least three years’ experience in multi-year federal projects, including managing budgets, reporting, and staff evaluation and planning.
- Project Management Systems: Experience using project management systems and software to assign and track tasks, such as Microsoft Planner or Asana. Proficient in Microsoft products, including SharePoint/OneDrive and scheduling meetings using Outlook Calendar. Experience using templates to produce reports and presentations in Word and PowerPoint.
- Soft Skills: Works well under pressure in a fast-paced environment and enjoys the challenge of learning new skills or subject areas as grant opportunities arise.
- Low-carbon Energy: Passion, experience, and willingness to embrace Carbon Solutions’ mission to address low-carbon energy challenges.
Desired Qualifications
- Project Management Professional certificate.
- Experience in CO2 capture, transport, and storage projects.
- Experience working with staff from a range of disciplines, including planners, social scientists, and economists.
- Passion for small business, including the opportunity to be part of how a small business grows and develops.
- Willingness to wear multiple hats, from producing technical work to managing projects.
- Experience communicating to non-technical audiences, stakeholders, and the general public about technical projects.
Compensation/Benefits
- Annual Salary: $110-130k, depending on experience.
